The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has agreed to finance a number of projects in the field of energy at the world specialized exhibition Astana EXPO 2017. This was announced at the XXX Plenary Session of the Foreign Investors' Council by the President of the EBRD Suma Chakrabarti, Bnews.kz informational portal reports.
"We are the largest investor in renewable energy in 37 countries. In total, our investments in “green” economy, including energy efficiency, amount to 1.9 million dollars in Kazakhstan, 2.2 million dollars in Central Asia. Kazakhstan is a part of this work. The energy of the future occupies a central role. Sometimes it seems that Kazakhstan and the EBRD together write a new chapter of history almost every day,” Chakrabarti said.
He noted that the bank had agreed on the basic principles for the construction of a wind power station in the East Kazakhstan region on the first day of EXPO 2017 exhibition.
"The largest solar cell park was launched on the second day. This suggests that Kazakhstan needs a new funding framework. We applaud Kazakhstan for the active role it plays in global efforts to implement the provisions of the Paris Agreement, and emissions are reduced by 15% by 2030 compared to 1990. We are also committed to this course. Kazakhstan, like many other countries, is moving towards the “green” economy,” the Head of EBRD said.
He said that an agreement had been signed with the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, which would allow to attract more investments in renewable energy for 300 megawatts already in 2017.
"The flow of investments to “green” energy in Kazakhstan is very welcome, and this flow should become a flood of such investments. But investments alone are incapable of solving problems. Last year, 1.2 million dollars was invested in Kazakhstan, and I believe the line of our projects in the energy of the future will grow and we will continue to invest. For instance, very soon we start working on another solar station. We hope to build it right in the centre, not far from the Baikonur cosmodrome,” Chakrabarti concluded.
Let us remind, the XXX Plenary Session of the Foreign Investors' Council was held on the territory of the world specialized exhibition Astana EXPO 2017. The meeting was attended by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.
