The X Astana Economic Forum was held on EXPO territory

19 June

The X Astana Economic Forum was held in the Congress Centre on the territory of the world specialized exhibition EXPO 2017. The theme of the forum is "New Energy - New Economy", EXPO2017.com website reports.

The event was attended by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. He noted that the jubilee Astana Economic Forum is being held at a historically crucial moment for the Eurasian space.

"With the entry into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization of India and Pakistan, a new global player with a market capacity of 3 billion people has actually been created. The coverage of the SCO countries by the revitalization of the Great Silk Road creates a new economic subregion. UN Secretary General António Guterres said that the SCO is “an important basis for today’s world order”, and the most powerful tool for preserving peace is the inclusive development. The inclusive and sustainable development is the focus of this forum," Nazarbayev said.

The Kazakh leader drew attention to the unprecedented speed of changing of the modern world and the advent of the era of new discoveries and scientific and technical solutions that fundamentally transform the nature of economic growth and our way of life. Nazarbayev noted that global economic policy does not fully meet modern challenges, including the critical level of environmental pollution and growing imbalances in global energy consumption. According to the President of Kazakhstan, it is important when economic growth contributes to solving the accumulated challenges, rather than multiplying them.

"The world needs a gradual transition to a new economic model. It must be based on clean energy, joint efforts and collective responsibility, taking into account the interests of the whole world," the Kazakh leader said.

In his speech, Nazarbayev also presented his vision of important aspects of the development of the world economy. He noted the need to develop new methods for calculating indicators that measure the wealth of countries and the welfare of their citizens, as well as the transformation of the global financial architecture. The President of Kazakhstan emphasised that economic growth should be based on the development of clean energy and preservation of the environment and stressed the importance of universal implementation of the Paris Agreement. The Kazakh leader also reported on the large-scale activities in the country within the framework of the Third Modernization of Kazakhstan and the measures taken to modernize the energy sector.

"Ten years ago we were the first in the CIS to adopt an Environmental Code. In 2012, The Law on “Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency” had been introduced. In the same year our country won the right to host the international specialized EXPO 2017 exhibition on which territory we are now. The theme of the exhibition is “Future Energy", Nazarbayev said.

In conclusion of his speech, the President of Kazakhstan stressed the importance of the concept of a nuclear-free world in the context of the ecological future of the planet.

"Kazakhstan is the leader in the struggle for a nuclear-free world. We are the first and the only country on earth to eliminate the nuclear test range forever and to voluntarily give up the powerful missile and nuclear arsenal. We will continue this work and urge everyone to support us in this struggle. We this, we reaffirm our commitment to global cooperation and peace,” the Kazakhstani leader concluded.

It should be noted that during his speech Nazarbayev drew attention to the fact that 1.5 billion people on Earth still live without electricity, about 3 billion people experiencing a drinking water shortage, as well as other current problems of mankind.
