EXPO will not affect peace talks on Syria in Astana

19 May

A regular meeting in Astana on the issues of the settlement of the Syrian conflict during the world specialized exhibition EXPO 2017 will not lead to any postponement of the negotiations on Syria either in terms or in place. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov, RIA "Novosti" reports. According to the agency, another round of talks is scheduled for mid-July while the exhibition will be held from June 10 to September 10.

"The issue of postponement is neither in terms of time nor place but I think that Kazakhstan has enough potential today to host another meeting of the Astana process on its site", - Abdrakhmanov said at a press conference responding to the journalist's question.

The edition reminds that four rounds of meetings on the Syrian settlement have already been held on Astana platform on January 23-24, February 15-16, March 14-15 and May 3-4. Their main result was the agreement on the joint operational group on monitoring the ceasefire regime in Syria and the signing by the guarantor countries (Russia, Turkey and Iran) of a memorandum on the establishment of zones of de-escalation in Syria aimed at ending violence, preserving the unity and territorial integrity of the country as well as a political settlement of the conflict.
